Riots in Montreal-North
Tuesday, August 12th, 2008 at 8:47 pm by JabberSunday night (10/08/2008), Montreal-North was the scene of the riots you could saw in the above video. All this was started by a tragic event that happened a day before.
What we know so far is quite limited. Two Police officers have approached a group of young people that were playing dice in a parking lot, to arrest Dany Villanueva. Dany, who’s out on bail for armed robbery, has resisted the arrest and his brother together with others from their group has came to help him. The Police officer felt threatened and he (according to the Police officials it was a male officer) fired four shots. One bullet killed Dany’s 18 year old brother, Fredy Villanueva and there were two more youngsters that were hit, but survived.
This is again a case of force used by the Police, just because they misinterpret the situation. Last year the whole World was horrified by the brutal killing at the Vancouver Airport of Robert Dziekanski, by tasering him to death. Now it’s the Montreal Police’s turn to prove that are unprepared to properly dose the force they exercise in their work.
Some questions are bugging me:
Why there were no warning shots fired?
Why the police officer aimed at an unarmed person to kill him? He could have just aimed at non-vital parts of the body…
Why there were only two Police officers?
Who will pay for this?
There was a young man’s life taken, Fredy Villanueva had no Police record, and now his family is crying him… There are other two people who are in the hospital, injured… In the riots an ambulance worker and three police officers were injured, eight cars torched, two fire trucks damaged and many Montreal-North businesses damaged…
How will the Montreal Police gain the trust of racial minorities?
