The former Communist guerrilla leader Prachanda (Fierce One), born Pushpa Kamal Dahal, was elected overwhelmingly as the new Prime Minister of Nepal.

The Himalayan nation came out recently from a bloody civil war that claimed the life of more the 13 000 people. The war ended when the king finally accepted to give up the throne in June 2008.

Prachanda’s dream is to establish a Communist republic and to wipe out the caste and gender barriers, that fraction the Nepalese society.

With the Communist party being the dominant in the Nepalese Parliament and now with Prachanda elected as prime minister, it is to be followed if this country will continue on the path of democracy, or it will slip into a totalitarian state. Prachanda’s party worships Stalin and Mao as iconic representatives of the Communist ideal.

Although one of the first declarations that Prachanda made after his election, was to promise not to harm foreign business interest in Nepal. It will remain to be seen how he will handle his newly found status and all that power that goes with it.

Will Nepal recover from the financial crisis it is because of the prolonged civil war?

Will he be able to create jobs for the many that are unemployed?
